Friday the 13th & Valentine's Day

Another very cool poster from Tina Kugler...Tina rocks it, no doubt.

Friday night at 7:00 we have a double-header of sorts. Lloyd Rohr will be performing. If you've seen Lloyd before you know that his music makes for a very mellow and enjoyable evening. He's an accomplished guitar player and plays songs that just about anyone and everyone enjoys, with a mix of his own songs and familiar favorites.

Also, Friday is the opening reception for "Local Color: A Panorama-o-rama," featuring photographs by Nate Walkner. Click here to go to the HTR Lakeshore Update page with a nice description of Nate's photography for this show.

Saturday, the 14th, is Valentine's Day. We're having a very nice wine and specialty pizza thing that you can participate in if you RSVP. Click here to see Kim's blog with the details. And then at 7:00 we're excited to have snorb! performing their brand of jazz and fusion. I've been listening to these guys via their myspace site. They are good, real good. They hail from West Lafayette, Indiana and apparently have won all of the cool music awards a band can win in that region. It'll be a great way to spend Valentine's evening.

TONIGHT: Art and Music

Just saw this drawing by Steph on her myspace site...YES!

Art Opening: Drawings and works by Steph Davies
7:00pm
Steph's drawings are quite wonderful...delicate, spontaneous and joyful.

Folk Musician Matt Davies

8:00pm
Matt will be providing live music for Steph's art opening. He's a fabulous folk guitarist and songwriter, very much in the spirit of Woodie Guthrie or early Dylan.

Art & Music images

Full house
Here's the Flickr set from last night's soirée for Andrea Drida's art opening and Kyle Feerick's gig. A busy, fun night and a lot of pictures in this set.

Allie and Andrea
It was a very nice opening for Andrea, with a ton of compliments on her work and several sales. And Kyle was great, with a couple of sets that included just a few covers (that he made his own), but mostly his own original tunes, which were very well received by the audience (lots of whistles and shouts). Doug (Day) set up his gear and recorded Kyle, so hopefully we got some good stuff down on tape (or more accurately, down on digital).

Our pal Marty also has some Stumpjack images on his own Flickr site, including a few from last night.

MUSIC & ART this weekend

poster by Andrea
Double whammy on Friday night: 7:00 opening art exhibition: "Broken Hearts Bleed" drawings and paintings by Andrea Drida. 8:00 Live Music with Kyle Feerick - Milwaukee independent musician.

Kyle Feerick

From the press release:

Kyle Feerick is a musician living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin who has shared the stage with many established Milwaukee artists. He has a reputation as an artist who enjoys spontaneous collaborations and musical experimentation. A member of the Milwaukee band Momentary, Feerick also performs numerous solo concerts while continually writing and experimenting with new sounds and recording techniques. His voice and music have fresh and upbeat quality reminiscent of the 80s English New Wave band XTC, while he lists his influences as including artits such as Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Dave Matthews Band, Bob Marley, Nirvana, Weezer, Wes Montgomery, and Sublime. This will be Feerick’s first appearance at Stumpjack Coffee and his performance will take place during the opening reception of “Broken Hearts Bleed,” an art exhibition featuring the drawings and paintings of Andrea Drida. Feerick’s Music can be heard on his MySpace site as well as Momentary’s site.

Saturday night at 8:00: Becky Markvart, recent winner of Best Local Musical Group (along with her partner Bill Martell) and new recording artist with her just released CD "Shine Down On Me."

The Great ATC Exchange

The Great ATC Exchange. opening Friday (tomorrow, May 23rd) at around 7:00pm. Kerry Michaels and Tom Reynolds will be playing tunes at around 8:00.

ATC by Colleen Ansbaugh

Here's a little more info about ATCs from cedarseed.com (love their homepage...this is the ATC link).

As their name indicates, ATC are collectables, a brilliant idea born of the older sports-themed trading cards. The one rule that makes an ATC derives from their origins: the dimensions of the ATC must be 2.5"x3.5", or 64x89mm.

To this rule are appended a couple of conventions. First, an ATC mustn't be sold, only exchanged, as the whole essence of these tiny works of art is about artists meeting (by correspondence or online if need be) and exchanging their works, thus meeting many artists and getting exposed to many personal styles. Second, on the back of each ATC the artist writes part or all of the following information: name, contact information, title of the ATC and number (1/8, 2/8...) if it's part of an edition. By definition ATCs are made in limited numbers, often no more than one of a kind. Unique ATCs are called originals; sets of identical ATCs are called editions and are numbered; sets of ATCs that are based on one theme but that are different are called series. Don't be intimidated by the concept of small editions or originals: very few people are anal about this. What most collectors really want are cards that were made with care. Based on that, numbers are meaningless.

That's all! The above is all you need to know to start making your own ATCs. Common sense dictates that they should be sturdy enough to survive mailing, and of reasonable thickness (unless you specifically want them otherwise. Transparent card sleeves are useful to protect the cards if need be. This is particularly true if they can easily get smudged or if the medium might stick during transport.

So, if you want to join the fun make yourself some ATCs and bring them in, peruse what's up, and make a trade by replacing the one you want with your own. The show will be up for the next four weeks or so.
